This battery is much better than the factory one. Great battery and it fixes some of the issues that I had with the factory battery( e.g. stops charging when battery is full).

Iomega eGo 2 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34823 (Jet Black) Review

Iomega eGo 2 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34823 (Jet Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I decided to test this hard drive by using it as the primary hard drive for my PVR/media center PC. Allowing me to free up some space from my internal hard drive while also putting the iomega through its paces.
The pros and cons of my experience with the drive are below:

PRO:
1. Minimalist design and square housing make the drive easy to stack with other components and won't negatively affect the aesthetic of your home theater or office.

2. The LED to indicate the device is on which is unusually bright, is situated toward the back of the drive making it less glaring in a dark room.

3. At 1 to 2 TB this drive is perfect for media use. Windows media center claims the 1TB drive, which I tested should hold 721.5 hours of standard def TV or 109.5 hours of HD TV. Or I assume, 50 hi-def movies (without extras).

4. When copying files to the drive, while recording TV, playback of TV stuttered initially, but then proceeded with smooth playback.

5. General playback was flawless, with no slowdown when playing HD content, and no indication that the transfer speed of the drive was not up to the task of acting as a media drive.

6. While not truly portable (you need to drag around a separate power cable and its much larger than most portable drives) this is small enough that you could take it with you on vacation, since it is about the size of a large paperback. Moreover while it is smaller than many other external hard drives I have used (for example it is half the size of a WD MyBook Essentials 500GB drive).

7. At around $100 the drive is a good deal, in between the prices for internal 1TB hard drives and external 1TB hard drives.

CON:
1. The only major problem I had was with the provided Power and USB cables. The USB cable was short about 3 feet but that's replaceable so the problem is relatively minor. The power cord, which would be much more difficult to replace is only about 4.5 feet and as such really limits drive placement. In my setup I did not have enough cord to place the drive where I initially intended and had to reshuffle components to get everything to fit which was a big pain.

2. As I mentioned above it is not a true portable drive and as such needs an external power cord which is annoying.

OTHER DESIGN NOTES:
Speeds when copying files to/from the drive where at an average of 19mb/s or 1.14GB/ min , much slower than USB 2.0 rated speed of 480 Mbit/s. I will note however that my other external hard drive, a USB 2.0 WD passport showed similar speeds, and my guess is that this is a result of the speed of the drive in my computer and the external drives. That said, iomega doesn't provide any precise information about the read/write speed of the drive.
Despite what another reviewer wrote the drive is not quite. A hushed but audible sound from the enclosure for the most part however this blended with the other background electronic noises and didn't detract from my listening or viewing experience.
If you want a truly quiet drive you'll have to go solid state.

The drive does tend to heat up, but only to a point that I would consider "warm" not to a heat that would worry me in terms of effecting the drive or other peripherals near the drive.

CONCLUSION:
The eGo preformed on par with the performance of most external hard drives I've used over the years. So what sets it apart is really the design.

If you're looking for something to take with you on a regular basis, I would consider a smaller drive, perhaps the eGo portable. Otherwise this is a solid option, especially considering its relative portability and size compared to some of the competition. Also portable 1TB hard drives without separate power cables are expensive, or experience frequent issues (just check amazon reviews). So I think this is a good option.

Which leaves the one caveat, if you are going to have to put the drive more than a couple of feet away from the outlet you won't be able to plug the drive in, and without power the drive is nothing but a rather expensive paperweight.

***I meant to give this three stars, but I can't seem to edit my rating... sorry!!***

This is a great external hard drive... it looks great, the light on the end is incredibly sleek, and it's very portable. Having said that, the "Mac ready" version is a waste of money. You pay a 50% price premium over the regular version at the same capacity, and the only difference is the addition of a firewire port and the fact that it comes pre-formatted for Macs. If you can live with just a USB connection, simply buy the regular version for much less money and format it yourself. It literally takes less than two minutes in Disk Utility....

I have only one other con to mention... it is made out of plastic, and for some reason I was naive and I expected it to be made of anodized aluminum.

Kingston Data Traveler Locker+ with Encryption 32 GB USB 2.0 Hi-Speed DataTraveler  DTL+/32 GB Review

Kingston Data Traveler Locker+ with Encryption 32 GB USB 2.0 Hi-Speed DataTraveler  DTL+/32 GB
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I received this product because I am a bzzagent.
When I first received this drive I was pleasantly surprised by the build quality. I've used numerous drives before and for this price point, this drive surpasses them all. I like the sleeve design that Kingston used with this. The sleeve is made of a sturdy and it seems as though it will offer ample protection without the worry of losing a cap or damaging the drive when it's in your pocket. Another nice touch is a small hole in the metal sleeve that allows the LED to be seen when the drive is plugged in.

Ease of Use:

The encryption setup is extremely easy. Upon plugging the drive in a wizard appears that asks for some basic information such as your name and company and an area to enter additional contact information. This is nice in the event that the drive was lost. This information will be available to make the drive easy to return to you, but the stored data that you add to the drive remains encrypted.

The next step is setting your password. The drive enforces a secure password policy and will not allow you to use an insecure password.

Once this is setup, you have access to the storage portion of the drive. A separate drive will be mapped for the data storage. When you mount the drive from this point forward, you will be prompted for the password that you set. After 7 bad passwords you get a warning that you have 3 remaining attempts. After 10 bad passwords attempts you are prompted for a new password. After setting the new password, the data is formatted from the drive. This is another feature that goes beyond just password protecting your data. It shows that keeping your data secure was the #1 goal for Kingston with this drive.

With good security there are always tradeoffs. The chance of losing your data because you forgot your password is a very real possibility. This is easily offset by keeping your password recorded in a secure location or database. The other tradeoff in this instance is speed. I ran a read and write test on the Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ against a standard flash drive that had no encryption. Those results are as follows:

Transfer Rates for the Kingston DataTraveler Locker+

Filesize 3.55 GB

Write 9.8 MB/s
Read 22 MB/s

Transfer Rates for the comparison non-encrypted flash drive:

Write 12 MB/s
Read: 28 MB/s

Clearly there is a performance hit for this drive with the encryption. However, I feel that the trade off of security for a good price is well worth waiting a few extra seconds for a file to copy. Overall I feel like this drive is secure, well built, and easy to use. If keeping your data secure is a priority, this is a great option at a great price.

Personal S200 2G Review

Personal S200 2G
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I decided to buy one due to the hardware level security, however, was not prepared for the features in the Personal S200 Ironkey. The applications for secure browsing, anonymous browsing, and password management included in the Personal edition are definitely what sold me on this device. Disclaimer: This review is based solely on my understanding of how the device works and may not be entirely correct.

Ironkey utilizes thier own tor network (if you prefer anonymous browsing) via the included browser. It allows the user to just click to activate or turn off. A user can do all their secure browsing (e.g. shopping, banking, etc.) directly off the Ironkey without concern of storing anything on the local computer. The password manager is fantastic to track all your passwords and autofill the form on the sites. You have control over what is written and can alter the information if necessary. Therfore, one password to access your Ironkey is all you need to remember if you go that route. Another great benefit is that you can backup your Ironkey access password to their site just in case you can't remember. This will avoid you from causing a wipe from multiple invalid attempts.

Ironkey provides firmware updates for the device as available. Support on the forums is also excellent. I recommend this for users who want that extra security to safeguard personal information.

Apple MacBook Air MC968LL/A 11.6-Inch Laptop (NEWEST VERSION) Review

Apple MacBook Air MC968LL/A 11.6-Inch Laptop (NEWEST VERSION)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

hi there

i am not going to go into a deep review, as there are already a lot of reviews out there covering the same things. but I will talk about special things that other reviews may not have covered. I personally have owned the 2010 11" and 13" airs, and I currently own the 2011 macbook pro 15" and 2011 11" air. the 15" is about 2x the processing power as the air (according to geekbench), but it lacks an SSD for faster daily tasks.

-- on Engadget, they recently covered that the 11" air has a faster SSD than the 13" ones. not a difference you'll notice but still a nice excuse to purchase a smaller one :) (it was something like 240mbps vs 180mbps estimated)

-- the battery life on the 11" is actually down from the previous generation by about 30 minutes on battery saving settings. Last gen can get about 7 hours, this one is just over 6 (about 25% brightness, web browsing only). Also, air's battery life plummets if it does moderate to heavy processing (flash, photo/movie editing, gaming), the pro's battery life goes down, but by much less.

-- online benchmarks show that the 2011 11" air is about 2.5x faster in processor speed than the 2010 model. however, if you never used an i5 or i7 processor before, know that you will also be able to multitask a lot better than the old core2duos. for example, you can edit in iMovies and photoshop at the same time (something that will lag the crap out of the old generation).

-- DO NOT WORRY ABOUT THE SCREEN SIZE. with Lion, applications can take advantage of its fullscreen function. For example, for many native applications like Safari, Mail, Calendar, etc, you can fullscreen them and they'll take up the entire screen, however, they dont actually take up the main desktop screen, but a whole new screen on its own. if you have multiple fullscreen apps, you can use 4 fingers to flick between them, fast and efficient. I owned the last gen air 11" with 10.6 SL, and it was a bit frustrating having multiple windows open, i usually have to minimize most of them. Now, you can browse in full 11" screen, and use 4 fingers to flick to check your mail.

-- keyboard and trackpad have more of an "umfph" feeling to them. a bit more resistance than the older models. the 2010 air was my first mac, and i was disappointed a bit by the light and cheap feeling keyboard, but the 2011 made it right.

-- FYI, if you never owned a macbook, the "instant on" feature is actually in all the unibody MacBooks and Pros, but they are just a bit slower than the air's. so don't think of it as a feature only the air has, it's just a bit faster.

-- you can't change anything in the air once bought, unlike the pro.

-- screen quality is actually worse than the Pro line up. Yes the air has more pixel density, but the vertical viewing angle is pretty bad. it is NOT made of the same screen as the Pro and iPad (IPS), however, it is a matte screen so a much better screen in the sun. i owned both the 11" and 13", the viewing angle problem was much more noticeable on the 13" just because the screen is bigger. I always found myself adjusting the 13" screen every time i move a bit.

-- 2gb ram is enough to run lion just fine.

-- sound seems to be slightly louder on the 13" vs 11". 11" sound is TINY. i always turn it to max whenever i'm watching videos. headphones are a must.

-- if you are deciding between a pro vs air, in general, i would say go with the pro if you do professional work with photo/movie editing, hardcore gaming (at least 15in), or if you plan on buying or already have a tablet. go with the air if you are a light user, want a tablet replacement. Owning an air and a tablet is a huge waste of money.

-- I would personally recommend the 1.6ghz, 4gb, 128ssd 11" macbook air. I believe that is the most useful and "bang for the buck" you can get vs the rest of the lineup. but everyone's preferences are different.

All in all, my only complaint about this air is the price. the $1200 macbook pro 13" vs the $1200 11" macbook air, the air has a better hard drive, but thats it. it's using less material to make, a slower processor, smaller battery, small and worse screen, less ports, i would think Apple can price it less than the macbook pro. basically, less everything, but paying the same price because it has a good design. thats my 2 cents at least. $899 for the entry model would shut me up :)

Hope this will help you decide.

Super Talent Pico-C 32 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive STU32GPCS (Silver) Review

Super Talent Pico-C 32 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive STU32GPCS (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

If you're in the market for a super tiny USB drive that will easily fit on your key chain... look no further. USB drives can't get much smaller than this one is. It's truly hard to fathom that this tiny and thin piece of metal can hold 16GB of information. If you don't need 16GB of storage, it also comes in 4GB and 8GB capacities. And if you want it with "bling"... there's a special gold plated version (I'm so not kidding! :)

I came across this USB drive while reseaching drives to upgrade to. My old 2GB Sandisk titanium was nice but is heavy, big, and didn't fit very nice on my keychain. I think what sealed the deal for me (what made me buy this pico) was that it is also water-proof and that the read/write speed is fast (200x). I've had mine for a few weeks now, and it truly is what it seems. I haven't dunked it in water yet, but I'm sure one of these days I'll forget it in my pocket and put it in the washing machine. It's just a matter of time really... and I hope it still works afterwards.

Pros:
-Super duper tiny, thin, and light... I mean miraculously tiny!

-Good build quality... made from metal and not plastic.

-Pretty fast... it took about 8 minutes to write 4GB of information on it... reads even faster.

-Water-Proof (I didn't test it, but I'm going on faith that it is)

-Affordable. This drive is very reasonably priced. I got my 16GB Pico for about $40.

Cons:

-Metal Surface is easily scratched

-Fits tightly in USB drives... sometimes you got to use a bit of force to get it in.

-Actual capacity is really 15GB... due to formating (this happens to all drives, the use-able capacity is always lower, I'm not going to get into the technical details)

-No LED light to indicate Read/Write... but you wouldn't really expect one on such a tiny drive. It'd be cool if it did have one though, ha ha.

Conclusion:
If you want a super tiny, fast, and durable USB drive... this is it. It does it all, and looks good too. You will be amazed at how small and light it is. And hell, it's even supposed to be water proof. What the hell more do you want? Gold plated? Yeah, you can get it in Gold too :) Buy it now... and amaze your friends. (No, I don't work for "Super Talent", I promise you)

MSI Wind Nettop 120 Desktop Review

MSI Wind Nettop 120 Desktop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I purchased one of the single core models like this for personal use, and was so impressed, I got one of these dual core models to use in my "day job." I wanted to experiment to see how well these beasties stood up against the other full sized PCs we use. I started out using Ubuntu Linux, but plan to try XP on it as well.

This barebone computer is NOT complete; minus RAM, a hard drive or Compact Flash card, an optical drive, monitor, keyboard and mouse, and operating system. Adding all those items can easily cost more than the basic machine, depending on how much you have sitting around. Since I had plenty of monitors, keyboards, and mice, I only needed to add RAM, hard drive, and optical drive to be ready to install Unbuntu. (I actually had a spare new SATA hard drive as well.)

Installing the parts was about a 20-30 minute task. The case and motherboard are quite well made and solid. I haven't installed a Compact Flash card on the motherboard, but that would require removing the motherboard due to the case size and positioning of the connector. Installing, updating, and running Ubuntu on it is a breeze. The wired network connection works quite well. I rarely use wireless, so haven't tried that.

While some people like to complain about fan noise, I come from an era where computers were a lot more noisy than they are today, and that doesn't make much difference to me. I don't find the fan to be a problem.

Benchmark tests I have seen rate the overall average performance gains from the dual core model at about 30% over the single core Atom. I can say that I noticed a very clear difference in how the Flightgear flight simulator worked on the different models. The dual core performance gain with that software was very apparent.

This is NOT a game machine or a 3D rendering machine, so don't compare it to those. It is a small, low power, basic computer that works well for most desktop uses, as well as many media uses. I have run photo slide shows while also playing WAV files (not smaller mp3s) with no problems at all on the single core machine. This beastie and a 17 inch (or larger) monitor would make a great digital picture frame.

This is the only computer I have seen using the dual core Atom chip, and I am surprised that more aren't using it. It would probably create some heat issues for tiny netbook-style cases, so this might just be the ideal format for it.

This is a sweet little computer, and you can hardly go wrong getting it for most daily uses. It is one of the most cost effective computer solutions available. I am currently using it in a small TV control room for monitoring online video conferencing recording, and it does just fine with that.

I have not tried playing DVDs or HD video files on these machines, since a DVD player is far less expensive. At some point in the near future, I will try a DVD in the dual core machine and update this review.

UPDATE: April 2010

Finally got one of these dual core versions for home. Running Ubuntu 9.10 on it and very happy with performance. I've heard of people running Windows XP as a virtual machine with Ubuntu as the basic OS, and I intend to try that, rather than do just an XP machine with this. I will be upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04 shortly, and will try the virtual XP box with that. (And before you ask, I am running XP because of ONE Windows-based program for which I cannot find a Linux substitute. I am also going to try it with Wine.)

While visibly faster than the single core version, these are still not multimedia machines, and do not fill a 19 inch widescreen monitor with smooth video. They can do smaller windows on the desktop pretty well, and I watch all manner of video from the web (YouTube and such) without any trouble (unless it is a strange format video file).

I am looking forward to the Atom 510 dual core version with an upgraded video chipset (the DE500 and 550, I think), minus the Windows 7 OS. While the performance boost from the 510 over the 330 is not huge, I will be interested in seeing it. I have also been looking at different vendors' machines with the Atom 330 dual core and NVidia Ion chipset. This level of machine is more than adequate for most tasks, and is so affordable that one can have more computers available (back-up, special tasks, etc).

These are very nice little machines, and you cannot go wrong putting together an Ubuntu machine with one of these. They do the basic computing tasks very nicely. These make sweet little machines for someone who just wants the basics, and with Ubuntu they are fairly safe and easy to use for tasks like digital photo management, word processing, etc.

MSI did really good with these, and I hope they continue to follow this line.

UPDATE April 30, 2010

Just upgraded this to Unbuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. It runs both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions, and the performance is crisp. I am looking forward to putting it through its paces.

UPDATE JAN 2011:

There are now new models, no longer called the Wind, but 6676 and such, which have newer processors like the Atom 510 and Ion graphics - still great machines!

Seagate FreeAgent Go for Mac 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive ST9032003FJA101-RK (Silver)
Average Reviews:

Wanted something to back up my files before I send in my Macbook-- 250GB is enough for my pictures, media files, documents. I know you can buy other hard-drives, usually formatted for Windows, and re-format them for Macs, but I wanted it to be easy. This Seagate drive is useable right out of the box-- comes with a USB connection and you just connect it. It's pretty streamlined, feels pretty sturdy in the hand, didn't run hot or whirl loudly when I used it today (about 5 hours). Took about an hour to transfer 80GB.

I didn't rate its reliability-- crosses fingers!!!-- because I've only had it for a day, but my Mac's hard drive, which I replaced, is also a Seagate and it's lasted me 3 years so far.

    Average Reviews:

The Burner & Viewer is very easy to use. Pop in disc, insert the loaded memory card and wait for the files to be read by the EZDigiMagic. When the light comes on, hit the record button and the device will load and burn the files onto the disc. The process takes about 10-15 minutes.

The unit is very light weight. The unit, charger or batteries, disc and rechargeable charger weighs less than the SLR digital camera I use. I have a small case of mini DVDs that fits in the included carrying case.

I use primarily Compact Flash (CF) or SD (Secure Digital) card from my digital cameras.

Brother HL-4040cdn Color Laser Printer with Duplex and Networking Review

Brother HL-4040cdn Color Laser Printer with Duplex and Networking
    Average Reviews:

    (More customer reviews)

This printer will tell you when you are out of toners and need new ones. And when you are out with just one of the color toner, this printer will not allow you to print anything until you replace it with the new toner.

So here is how to override these problem, and you decide when the toner needs to be changed... and not the printer.

    1. Slide out the toner trays and put a piece of black electrical tape over the sensors on each color toner. This will make the print think that it has full toner.

    2. If you already see "Replace Toner" messages, just RESET it by opening the front COVER and pressing CLEAR and REPRINT together. Scroll up and down to reset desired toner.

    3. If you think you have more life and juice left on its drum and laser parts, just reset it and forget it! Open the COVER, and hold down GO and hit UP (+) button. Scroll through the menu to select and reset!!!!

After the "replace toner" message, I reset the counter, and I have printed over 2000 more pages on a same cartridge. But be aware! You will start to see some "sprinkles of toners" on your pages as they are way over used.

Installed the 128GB in my Macbook Air Rev A. Certain things (like system boot time) seem quite fast but the genreal user experience is a major downgrade for me. There seems to be long lags whenever the SSD is accessed which results in multi-second spinning beach ball between simple mouse click operations, or sometimes even when just typing text. Considering going back to my 80GB apple 4200rpm drive before I go insane.

Dell Inspiron 11 11.6-Inch Obsidian Black Laptop (Windows 7 Premium) Review

Dell Inspiron 11 11.6-Inch Obsidian Black Laptop (Windows 7 Premium)
    Average Reviews:

    (More customer reviews)

I want to add one thing that is perhaps easy to overlook with this laptop: it has the best CPU in it's class and price range. Most notebooks with an 11.6 inch screen have a Celeron CPU (such as the new Acer 1410 series). This means less cache and no "Intel Speedstep" which is an important power saving feature (mostly used when in battery mode). Celeron laptops will drain your battery quickly when you use any compute heavy task. The other common CPU is a single core "Core Solo". The single core CPUs have the bad habit of slowing to a crawl whenever the anti-virus kicks in (because it can't offload that task to the second core) and being generally slow if you run any internet security software(which any sane person would today but adds a lot of background CPU tasks that can run on a second core if you have one). You can step up to a full Core2 Duo, but that can add 20%-30% onto the cost (see the Acer Timeline series).

Dell did the right thing here when they used the 1.3GHz Intel Pentium SU4100 Processor. It has two cores, 2MB cache (twice the Celeron but 2/3 the more expensive Core2 Duo), and a 800MHz memory bus (vs. the Celeron's 667Mhz). And it has the all important SpeedStep technology found in the more expensive Core2 Duo. The only major feature it lacks is Virtualization, which is mostly a server technology which no home application to speak of. It uses the same core as the more expensive Core2 Duo so aside from the smaller cache the basic performance is the same (though some Core2 Duos have faster memory bus). It's the best fit price/performance wise but lately it's been passed over for the cheaper Celeron but vendors who count on consumers not knowing any better.

Intel SS4200EHW Entry Storage System Review

    Intel SS4200EHW Entry Storage System
    Average Reviews:

    (More customer reviews)

The reviewer By K. Wong is wrong on some of his comment, you can install WHS on to this SS4200-EHW without any additional hardware or cable, just need a 2gb minimum usb flash drive and you can slipstream WHS into the flash drive and you can do it unattended using nlite or qs.ini since WHS is already automated. its a little tricky i have to try it like 4-5 times before i got it to work. i own the SS4200E model which have the DOM flash NAS, its just too basic for me i couldn't remote home from work and other thing i want to do. WHS work very well with this, you can even upgrade the memory to 2GB using 1 slot, and cpu if you desire more horsepower you can even upgrade that to dual core use the E2200 Allendale 2.2GHz or 2.4GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor.

i got this item recently for a very very good deal only 150 free shipping, not from amazon of course, i hate amazon free shipping take forever! got mine item within 3days from n e w e g g! beside that the quality of this SS4200E are very good, heavier than i thought.

if you want to slipstream your whs into this box google for slipstream whs and the article from wegotserved stated something about dos driver, this mean for you to get intel sata driver, network driver etc... don't need the chipset driver, you can get all the driver from intel site. you don't need mouse and keyboard or anything else to set this up i use anothher computer with xp to connect to the nas after it finish install and setup the final admin pass and finalize the installation.

if you don't know much about computer buying this SS4200-EHW without software is going to create headache for you. and the SS4200E will only work if 2 hard drive is install, will not work with one hard drive or 3 hard drives. i don't care what's the manual said, it will not work with one hard drive.

I have been very pleased with this product so far. It replaced a large, noisy Core 2 Duo system I was using for Media Center purposes. I wanted something I wouldn't have to feel guilty about leaving on all the time [as far as power use], so this is perfect since it tops out at 17 watts. I currently have it setup with XBMC media center software, which provides a great interface for playback of my local and network-attached storage. Please do remember to "Enable GPU Rendering" in any media playback software for these ION chips. People all over the web are trashing the IONs for not being able to play 1080p video files. This is certainly the case if the Atom processor is trying to do all the work. Until I enabled the GPU offloading, 1080p videos were just slideshows.

I am also using it as a vintage game emulator and a way to access the web on my TV from the couch. Pair this PC with the Anker RII Mini Bluetooth keyboard and you're in for a treat. The unit is attractive with a lot of options--including overclocking--in the BIOS, which is rare for a pre-fabbed system like this. It is also quite customizable and easy to work on if you need to upgrade/replace a part. While rarely a purchasing factor for me, the unit is in a very attractive shell, so it will fit in nicely with whatever other modern electronics you have on your entertainment rack. You also have a wall/monitor mount option if you want to hide it behind your TV

Runs Windows 7 smoothly with all the eye candy cranked up. Super quiet. Does everything my C2D did using way less power. I have nothing negative to say about this product. It has been my favorite purchase of 2011, and undoubtedly the best Media Center solution I have ever used.

Verbatim InSight 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 96980 (Black) Review

Verbatim InSight 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 96980 (Black)
    Average Reviews:

Out of the box and at first glance, I was almost sure that I had received a digital scale instead of the new Verbatim InSight 320 GB Portable Hard Drive. I am sure others have thought the same. When using a Windows based platform, the unit was up and running in no time with simple plug and play features.

My primary use for the Insight 320 is for photo storage backup. Transfer of jpeg files was a relatively smooth process. Its all about drag and dropping files. The installed and very basic Nero software package is give or take at best. Personally after reviewing Nero and uninstalling it, I came to the conclusion that its a waste of space. Its a matter of choice whether to install the Nero software on your computer or not. An optional password security feature is included too.

Encased in a gloss black, hard plastic body, this stealthy unit displays the drive's personalized name and the remaining capacity on its 128x32 pixel screen. Even when I unplug the USB cable the data is viewable. Personalization tags are easily changed when connected. A nice feature is that the unit automatically updates itself when connected to my computer. Measuring in at 3"x6"x.5" and weighing almost 6 ounces, it goes without saying that this model is compact.

The Verbatim Insight 320 Hard Drive comes packaged with an 18" USB 2.0 cable, User Guide booklet, and the installed Nero Back It Up software package. The manufacturer backs up this product with a five year warranty. Even though I found no valid telephone customer support numbers posted on the website, Verbatim does offer limited help via links, email and snail mail.

For me the most notable shortcomings of this product is the installed Nero software package, the short USB cable, and the finger print magnet finish. Even with those minuses I still find this product to be an exceptional tool. Without a doubt, the Verbatim Insight 320 Portable Hard Drive is a worthy product that holds its own.
