Avoid this particular "JumpDrive Secure II" line of drives at all costs.
My company recently purchased mass quantities of these things in 4 and 8GB varities. My immediate group has 18 people, and most of our drives (all but two, I believe) have failed in some fashion.
My group has had one case of an out-and-out failure where data couldn't be recovered; but in most cases, the drives either (1) stopped being recognized as valid USB 2.0 devices and fall back to 1.0 speeds or (2) require the user to remove/reinsert the drive multiple times before the computer recognizes it.
Case (1) is a little strange because when you insert the drive, Windows will give you the common error stating that you have a USB 2.0 device that would perform faster if you plugged it into a USB 2.0 port. Then you're relegated to 1.0 speeds. This drove me nuts for quite some time, thinking I had a problem with the actual port on my laptop or with Windows drivers, etc. It wasn't until I tried my personal USB stick on that same laptop that I realized that the ports on the laptop were perfectly functioning 2.0 ports. Then I tried the malfunctioing Lexar on my desktop (with functioning 2.0 ports) and got the same error. Started asking around my group and ran into several people with the same issue.
Case (2) just seems like the hardware somehow wears/gets loose and fails after repeated use. One guy in my group showed us that he can plug his in, it's not detected, but if he "props it up" with one finger to adjust the angle of the drive in the USB slot, it detects it fine.
Some unlucky folks have both issues with their drives.
When we called our corporate IT department to get replacements, we noticed they'd swapped brands. The tech that brought my new USB stick told me they'd had many, many failures with the Lexar drives (so the issues obviously extended beyond my small group), forcing them to try a different brand of device.
