I bought this drive just under two months ago, before a big trip overseas. I knew I'd be taking a lot of photos and HD video, and wanted to make sure I had a place to store all the files until I could get home and copy them to my network storage device.
At first everything with the Verbatim Acclaim USB 500GB drive was fantastic. I would plug it in and it would pop right up. File transfers were zippy. The only issues is that it would sometimes not allow itself to be disconnected using the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature on Windows XP, so I'd have to just leave my computer running until it would let me stop the drive to remove it.
But today, the drive failed. I was in the process of moving files on the drive from one folder to another when it stopped responding and took out Windows Explorer. I had to restart the computer from Task Manager after waiting for 10 minutes for things to settle down.
I restarted the computer many times, and the drive was not found by the computer after that, even though the power indicator was lit.
Finally, the drive was found by my computer, but showed up as "Local Drive." And after many minutes of waiting I was able to open the drive, but received a notice that the drive was unformatted and needed to be formatted. So much for my 80+ GB of video and photos I've taken so far. As of posting this review, the drive is back to not being recognized by the computer, even though I was once able to find the "Verbatim" drive on the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature. Now it's just gone.
I've sent a message to Verbatim's tech support folks...we'll see how they do.
